Most custom home stories start the same way: A family has a vision, they find a builder, and they build it together from the ground up. This build didn’t start that way. The Project: What Was Being Built
Before the family entered the picture, Canaan Homes was building what would become one of their most striking homes to date.
The design drawn entirely in-house, as every Canaan project is, called for a mountain-modern five bedroom, five bathroom home on a lot with views of classic Colorado Springs that will never get old. We built real wood siding on the exterior and interior, high-end stone, and an abundance of Pella windows positioned specifically to frame the landscape rather than fight it.

In the Tri-Lakes neighborhood where this home was being built, projects like this typically take 10–12 months from groundbreaking to completion. Canaan broke ground in December.
Three Months In: An Unexpected Conversation
About three months into the build, what seemed to be a classic spec build became everything but that. A young couple, John and his wife, came to see the home with their two daughters. They weren’t looking for a spec home exactly. They were looking for the right home. And what they found on that lot in Monument was close enough to their vision that they wanted to make it theirs.
After working out a deal with the clients, we pivoted to our time-tested full custom experience. Although we had one or two finish items already ordered, we saw an opportunity to do what we do best: Give a full custom home building experience to provide clients their new forever home. Our main goal with every client that we work with is to give them the guidance and opportunity to truly make their stamp on each project.
The spec home became a semi-custom build overnight.
Building It Their Way Within a Real Timeline
What followed was the kind of client experience Canaan is built for.
We worked together and created a budget for each area of the home and guided the Santos family through a series of selection meetings. Walking them through tile options, paint palettes, countertop materials, plumbing fixtures, and the dozens of other decisions that define how a home actually feels to live in. The goal was to give the family genuine guidance so that every decision they made was one they’d be happy with years later. We provide a balance of making sure the clients are getting the look and style they want to achieve while also using our decades of knowledge to do so while staying on budget.
The only finishes they weren’t able to fully select were the cabinetry and stone since those had already been committed. Everything else was theirs to shape.
The Baby Caveat…
There was one detail that made the timeline non-negotiable. The family was expecting their third child, due mid-summer. If the home was going to be ready for them, it needed to be fully finished before that date.
We went to work.
In a neighborhood where similar builds take 10 to 12 months, we had broken ground in December and now needed to deliver a completed, fully finished custom home by June. The mid-construction pivot to semi-custom with all the additional selection meetings, finish changes, and coordination that came with it makes the early deadline scary for most contractors. Not us. Because we hit it.
The family moved in before the summer. Their third child arrived on schedule. And the home that was supposed to be a spec house became the place where their family would grow.
Inside the Finished Home, Room by Room
The primary suite became one of the signature spaces in the home. A fully custom walk-in closet. A bathroom anchored by a freestanding soaking tub, with backlit mirrors that create the kind of ambient light that makes a bathroom feel like a retreat rather than a utility room. A floating vanity that keeps the floor visible and the space feeling open.
The butler’s pantry, fully outfitted and functional, gives the kitchen the kind of behind-the-scenes infrastructure that serious home cooks and entertainers appreciate. Nothing on the counter that doesn’t need to be there.
The basement entertainment area earned its design investment. The custom wet bar flows through multi-panel sliding glass doors to the lower patio, a configuration that makes the transition between inside and outside feel intentional rather than abrupt. For a family that entertains, it’s the kind of space that gets used.
And throughout the home, the Pella windows do exactly what they were positioned to do. The lot’s views are part of the interior, visible from the living areas, the primary suite, and the spaces where the family actually spends their time.
